- Born on August 17th 1935, Walter George Schmidt is my Father. A member
of the armed forces, and a paratrooper, he supported his family as a stone mason until he started his own construction
company. In 1968 he purchased Balnakill Farm in West Charlton New York, the place we call home. Growing up on a
beef farm may not seen like a dream childhood but I would not change it for the world. Each one us has become
extremely successful and creative. It was here that my siblings and I learned anything was not only possible
but within reach. I'm not really sure what Saturday morning cartoons are, but I know more than most when it
comes to turning an idea in to a reality. My father has been very helpful in the process of creating these works. Many
hours have been spent standing behind the archaic stone saw, cutting and drilling in the wet muck of stone dust
and water to create Gotham Stone tiles and the base for most of my work. His wife Maggie a potter, painter and artist
has mixed and poured tons of hydrostone. When we first started making tiles it was fun, now its amazing. On behalf of
my entire family, I would like to thank the collectors.
